Scott has taken numerous long distance bike trips starting at the age of 11. All of those rides were done with his dad. At the age of 11, Scott and his dad did an 80 mile one-day ride in Canada. After that, he was hooked! The next year they did a 400 mile ride, also in Canada. At the age of 13 and 15, Scott rode together with his Dad from Mexico to Canada -- 2200 miles in 21 days. For the last trip, they cycled 940 miles down the coast of California in 2000 (Dad was 71 years old!). They averaged 94 miles a day! Wow! If we could all do that at 71 years old, we'd be very lucky.
On that last trip, Scott had the idea to eventually cycle back down the coast, this time taking a surfboard to surf the amazing breaks on the remote California coast. He wanted to take someone on the trip in order to pass along the amazing experiences he had with his father. Mike was the obvious person to do this with! Scott taught Mike to surf a number of years ago, and in 2008 they biked and surfed 600 miles down the California coast.
Rather than do the trip solely for self-gratification, Mike and Scott wanted to raise awareness about the many environmental issues facing our coastline by demonstrating that it is possible to travel and surf in environmentally friendly ways. It just takes longer and is harder. They also used the opportunity to raise approximately $2,700 for the American Cancer Society.
It is now time to plan the second trip. Scott and Mike hope to make this an annual trip for more and more people each year.
